A Spicy New BMW X5 M60i Variant Is Coming

Spy Shots / 3 Comments

Is the X5 M too much? Is the regular X5 too dull? X5 M60i is the solution.

A couple of months ago, we learned that BMW would be altering some of its traditions when it comes to the styling of its performance-oriented cars. Specifically, we learned that M Performance models, or so-called M-enhanced cars, would be getting squared quad exhausts, while the full-fat M cars would retain round piping. That puts these new spy shots of the latest BMW X5 into perspective, as these images tell us that a new M60i variant is coming to the range, effectively replacing the M50i model as the buffer between the boring (regular) and blistering X5 (M) variants. We recently discovered as much about the X6, and now that we have a closer and clearer look at the X5, BMW's plans are coming into focus.

This brings the X5 in line with the naming convention already embraced by the latest BMW X7. It also means that the X5 is getting the M-developed S68 engine, which is a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 with 48-volt mild-hybrid assistance. According to our sources, this will translate to 530 horsepower (well below the engine's limits) with power going to all four wheels via an eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission. In the old M50i, you got 523 hp.

But back to the styling. As mentioned above, squared quad-exit exhaust tips sit inside a gray faux diffuser. We can also expect the taillights' graphics and rear fascia to be subtly updated, but for the most part, the changes will be mild.

The M-style mirror caps are present as on the X6 prototype we mentioned earlier and there's also what appears to be an enlarged vent on the fender. Up front, the headlights will be slimmer and will also feature new graphics, while the kidney grilles will likely be mildly updated as on the X6, possibly with illumination as on recent large BMW models like the 7 and 8. The entire bumper, in fact, will be mildly updated, and we can be sure that some sexier wheels will be fitted in time. Inside, we can expect to see iDrive 8 infotainment. Ultimately, the entire vehicle is getting a little facelift and a bit more power. We'll see the finished product later this year or early in 2023.
