2022 Audi A5 Coupe Review: A Class Act

The Audi A5 Coupe slots into the two-door compact luxury coupe class and offers seating for four adults, but it is so much more than that classification; it looks gorgeous, offers plenty of power, and is packed with premium technology. Power is provided by a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine producing 261 horsepower which gets sent to all four wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The A5 Coupe goes up against rivals such as the controversial new BMW 4 Series Coupe and older, yet still classy, Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe. This Audi delivers on good looks, a stunning interior, impressive performance, and usable trunk space for a price lower than the competition - in base form - putting the four-ringed brand in a prime spot. If it's a relaxed executive coupe you are looking for, our A5 Coupe review uncovers why the Audi is perfect for the job.

2022 Audi A5 Coupe Changes: ๐Ÿš™Whatโ€™s the difference vs the 2021 Audi A5 Coupe?

After its 2020 refresh and the addition of mild-hybrid technology in 2021, the 2022 A5 Coupe stays mostly the same. All trims get the previously optional sport suspension that is nearly an inch lower to the ground as standard equipment and an additional 19-inch wheel design has become available. Android Auto is now wireless too. The optional Black Optic package is replaced by the Black Optic Plus package that is more expensive and adds several features. The other packages and options have also been streamlined.

Pros and Cons

  • Stunning looks
  • Solid tech
  • Ample performance
  • Balanced driving dynamics
  • Cheaper than main rivals
  • Cramped interior
  • Pricey options
  • Small trunk

2022 Audi A5 Coupe Exterior

There is no doubt that the Audi A5 quattro Coupe is a good looking car from just about any angle, and we think the standard S Line exterior body kit, which includes bumpers, badges, and side sill blades, adds that extra touch of aggression that makes it really stand out, especially now that the standard sport suspension hunkers the car down closer to the ground. The base model features 18-inch five-double-spoke star design wheels, LED headlights with high-beam assist, as well as a panoramic sunroof. The Premium Plus adds matrix-design LED headlights, while the Prestige includes matrix LED headlights with Audi laser light, plus an animation effect for the headlights and taillights. The $2,000 Black Optic Plus package on the top two trims adds 19-inch five-arm-cutter design bi-color alloy wheels with all-season tires, gloss-black exterior trim, mirrors, and badging, a matte-black grille, and red brake calipers.

2022 Audi A5 2-Door Dimensions

This A5 is classified as a compact executive coupe with similar dimensions to the BMW 4 Series Coupe and Infiniti Q60 Coupe. The wheelbase stretches 108.8 inches, and the total length of the coupe is 184.9 inches, which is three inches shorter than the BMW. The 2022 A5 Coupe is 53.9 inches tall, and with the mirrors included, it sits 79.8 inches wide. The track in the front is 62.4 inches, and 61.7 inches in the rear. Curb weight comes in at 3,638 pounds.

2022 Audi A5 Coupe Exterior Colors

To accentuate the curvaceous body lines of the 2-door A5, Audi offers eight different color options, some of which look great, while others fail to impress. The only no-cost options available are Ibis White and Turbo Blue, both of which look pretty good. For the rest of the color range, you will have to cough up some extra dough. Colors such as District Green Metallic, Glacier White Metallic, Tango Red Metallic, Navarra Blue Metallic, Daytona Gray Pearl, and Mythos Black Metallic all go for a price of $595. If we could have our way, we would get the Audi A5 two-door coupe in Daytona Gray pearl. For something really exclusive, Audi will paint your A5 in an exclusive special paint color for $3,900.

2022 Audi A5 Coupe Quattro Performance

The Audi A5 Coupe quattro won't blow you away with massive performance figures, but instead offers a refined and capable driving experience that will leave you most satisfied. The A5 Coupe is only available with a single engine and transmission, which does limit new buyers who would possibly want something faster. Still, again, the A5 Coupe is plenty fast enough for the majority of drivers. The 0-60 sprint takes only 5.3 seconds, according to Audi, and the A5 Coupe will continue on to a top speed of 130 mph. The BMW 430i xDrive will hit 60 in exactly the same amount of time. If you want more go, you'll have to look at the S5 coupe, which offers a turbocharged six-cylinder engine and a zero to sixty sprint time of only 4.4 seconds.

Engine and Transmission

You might get three trim levels, but you only get one choice when it comes to the engine and transmission. The 2022 Audi A5 Coupe moves with surprising eagerness thanks to a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, which in this configuration develops 261 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque with the help of a 12-volt mild-hybrid electric system. Power is sent to all fours via a seven-speed S Tronic dual-clutch automatic transmission. This engine doesn't punch you with oodles of torque from the word go but rather feeds torque over a wide range, which makes it feel predictable and quick. In the city, the engine and transmission work well together; there's always enough response to get you where you need to be. On the highway, the A5 has enough power to carry the car with confidence, and overtaking is done with ease. The numbers might not sound grand, but the real-world performance from this car is excellent. The transmission should also get a shoutout: you don't get a manual, but the DSG box in this car is crisp and responsive and feels best when left to do its own thing.

Handling and Driving Impressions

It should be noted right from the start that the 2-door A5 is not a focused sports car. Unlike its RS-badged siblings, the A5 Coupe takes on a more laidback, yet still sporty, driving style that matches the rest of its offering perfectly. This car can be relaxed when needed, and sharp enough when the time comes. Out on city roads, the suspension can feel taught but is never overly crashy, and road imperfections won't break your neck unless you go for the larger 19-inch wheels, in which case things start to get a bit rough. Throw the A5 around the corners, and you can feel that it's not a 4-door: it changes direction with confidence, and its quattro AWD system always keeps things in check. Through a long sweeping corner, mid-corner bumps are dealt with decisively. Steering response is good if a tad over-assisted, but that is to be expected in this class. Dynamic mode tightens up the steering, but not overly so. On the highway, the A5 is a wonderful companion and bumps are soaked up without hesitation.

The standard sport suspension lowers the car by nearly an inch, but it comes to the detriment of ride quality on the optional 19-inch wheels. The A5 Coupe is not a sports car, but it comes close in terms of dynamic ability.

A5 Coupe Gas Mileage

With only one engine and transmission option to go for, the 2022 Audi A5 coupe delivers the same fuel consumption across all trim levels. The A5 strikes an outstanding balance between performance and frugality thanks to its small capacity 2.0-liter turbocharged engine. When driven with a light foot, it will return decent fuel economy figures. The Audi A5 Coupe will deliver gas mileage figures of 24/31/27 mpg on the city/highway/combined cycles, which is commendable. The brand-new 2022 BMW 4 Series Coupe will achieve 25/34/28 mpg in rear-wheel drive configuration, but the AWD 4 Series will match the Audi A5 quattro by returning 23/33/27 mpg.

With a 15.3-gallon fuel tank on board, the A5 will manage a maximum range of around 413 miles.

A5 Coupe Interior

Audi has stuck to what it knows best with the 2022 A5 Coupe. At first glance, the interior looks restrained yet classy, and once seated, you get a real sense of how user-friendly the space really is. All controls are within easy access of the driver, and if you're used to Audi's rock-solid build quality and use of soft-touch, quality materials, you won't be disappointed here. Seating space in the front is plentiful but gets tight in the rear, as you can imagine. The latest 10.1-inch infotainment screen dominates the center of the dashboard and adds to the sleek overall look. Notable interior features standard across the range include three-zone automatic climate control, leather seats, and heated front seats.

Seating and Interior Space

The Audi A5 is not a 4-door or Sportback, so your space is limited. The Audi A5 Coupe only seats four adults, which is on par with competitors such as the BMW 4 Series. Seat comfort is excellent: Audi has designed front seats that are supportive and comfortable and should prove to be supporting over long drives. The seating position for the driver is good and feels suitably sporty. The headroom in both the front and rear is on the tighter side, but six-foot-tall occupants will still manage. Legroom is ample in the front, but with only 32.7 inches of legroom in the rear, adults of a larger size will start complaining. At least getting in and out of the A5 Coupe is quite easy, but again, larger passengers will have to squeeze in the back. Visibility is good out the front but diminishes to the rear.

Interior Colors and Materials

In the USA, all trim levels come standard with leather upholstery, signifying the premium status of the A5 Coupe. The base model comes standard with your choice of Atlas Beige upholstery with Granite Gray stitching, a more demure Black, Okapi Brown, or Rock Gray with Granite Gray stitching. These colors are paired with standard Gray Oak Natural Wood inlays. The mid-range Premium Plus offers the same choices but offers the $500 S line interior package with its brushed aluminum inlays, stainless steel pedal caps, and a mix of leather/Dinamica upholstery. Opting for the Black Optic Plus package for $2,000 on this trim brings Aluminum Ellipse dark inlays.

A5 Coupe Trunk and Cargo Space

We never expected the 2022 Audi A5 Coupe to offer tons of trunk and overall cargo space, but since its trunk space reduction in 2020, the A5 Coupe has lagged behind the competition. Behind the rear seats, you're greeted with 10.9 cubic feet of space. That space can be increased by folding down the back seat, but you'll still only be able to fit two or three suitcases in there. The Mercedes C-Class Coupe offers marginally less with 10.5 cubic feet, while the BMW 4 Series dominates with 12 cubic feet of space.

Small items can be stored in the front and rear door pockets but don't expect any large water bottles to squeeze in there. The glove box is on the smaller side and will only fit a pair of sunglasses and a phone or two. The cup holders are also inconveniently tight for some reason.

A5 Coupe Infotainment and Features

Features

You certainly get what you pay for here, and the spec sheet reads like a real premium car's. The base model is at the receiving end of features such as three-zone automatic climate control, an auto-dimming rearview mirror with a digital compass, LED interior lighting, and heated front seats with eight-way power adjustment (and four-way power lumbar adjustment for the driver). The Premium Plus adds a memory function for the driver's seat, adaptive cruise control, a top-view camera system, and a hands-on detection steering wheel. The Prestige adds a head-up display, traffic sign recognition, and Matrix-design LED headlights with a laser high beam. Driver assistance features include Audi's pre sense basic and pre sense city.

Infotainment

All Audi A5 Coupe models come standard with a large 10.1-inch touchscreen display, which dominates the center console. We found that the lack of buttons on the dashboard led to driver distraction: you'll have to nod your head down to the screen every time you want to make an adjustment. The infotainment system includes natural language voice control, Audi's smartphone interface with Apple CarPlay and Google Android Auto, dual front USB ports, Bluetooth streaming, as well as Audi connect CARE assistance and security services. The standard sound system consists of 10 speakers and a six-channel amplifier with 180 watts of power. The Premium Plus introduces the 12.3-inch Audi virtual cockpit display and SiriusXM radio. The Prestige trim adds a Bang & Olufsen sound system with 19 speakers and 755 watts of power. You also get MMI navigation plus, and a six-month trial subscription to Audi connect PRIME and Audi connect PLUS online services with the range-topper.

A5 Coupe Problems and Reliability

The 2021 Audi A5 Coupe was recalled three times by the NHTSA. The issues were for a rear light wiring harness that is missing scuff protection, while the others related to rear axle lock nuts that could become damaged and a seatbelt locking retractor that may malfunction. No recalls have yet been issued for the 2022 model at the time of writing.

Audi will cover the 2022 Coupe with a four-year/50,000-mile basic and powertrain warranty. Also included are a 12-year corrosion warranty and four years of roadside assistance.

A5 Coupe Safety

Unfortunately, the 2022 model has not been under review by the NHTSA. However, the agency did evaluate the larger 2022 Audi A5 4-door Sportback which attained a full five-star crash rating, indicating that the two-door Coupe should be similarly safe. The 2022 Coupe also returned Good results for every crashworthiness test from the IIHS, although the headlights were rated as Marginal, Acceptable, or Good depending on the model.

NHTSA safety ratings are not available at this time.

Key Safety Features

There is a plethora of safety features packed into each and every 2022 Audi A5 Coupe. All trim levels come with six airbags, a rearview camera, and tire pressure monitoring. Driver assistance features on the base model include keyless start-stop, automatic windshield wipers, cruise control, Audi pre sense basic, high beam assist, and Audi pre sense city. The Premium Plus adds adaptive cruise control, traffic jam assist, active lane assist, a top-view camera system, front/rear parking assistance, as well as Audi side assist and pre sense rear, which includes rear cross-traffic alert and vehicle exit warning. Finally, the Prestige introduces a head-up display, laser light technology, and traffic sign recognition.

Verdict: ๐ŸIs the 2022 Audi A5 Coupe a Good Car?

The Audi A5 Coupe does precisely what it says on the label. It's a beautiful car without a doubt. Whether it's prettier than the Mercedes-Benz C-Class is arguable, but it stands up to the rest of the class with its head held high. The interior of this car is up to scratch and feels every bit as luxurious as the BMW 4 Series Coupe. Interior space is good in the front, but naturally, it gets tight in the back, and we wouldn't recommend six-footers try and squeeze in there. On the road, the A5 is a comfortable cruiser with hints of sportiness, but it doesn't overwhelm the overall driving experience. It handles with composure and can even be considered fun when flung around with vigor. Performance from the turbocharged 2.0-liter four-banger is good and should be enough for most. Cargo space is on the limited side but still compares favorably with competitors such as the C-Class Coupe. There are lots of standard features on offer, and the driver assistance features are impressive, especially on the top two trims. The A5 Coupe is competitively priced and comes highly recommended.

๐Ÿš˜What's the Price of the Audi A5 Coupe?

US pricing for the A5 two-door coupe is competitive when compared to the BMW 4 Series Coupe and Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe. Pricing for the base Premium model starts at $45,600, which excludes tax, registration, and a destination fee of $1,045. Moving up to the Premium Plus will see you forking out $50,500. Finally, the top-tier Prestige costs $55,050. The price of the Audi A5 Coupe will exceed $60,000 if you go for the Prestige and all of the available options. Among other coupes for sale in this segment, the newer BMW 4 Series begins at $45,800.

2022 Audi A5 Coupe Models

The 2022 Audi A5 Coupe lineup comprises three trims and they are Premium, Premium Plus, and Prestige. All models use an identical drivetrain, namely a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four engine with 261 hp, a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, and quattro AWD.

The base Premium trim gets standard 18-inch alloy wheels, a panoramic sunroof, and LED headlights with high-beam assist. The gauges are analog with a seven-inch color driver-information display between them and MMI infotainment touchscreen measures 10.1 and incorporates Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Audi pre sense basic and pre sense city driver-assistance suites are included.

The Premium Plus adds to these features matrix-design LED headlights, dynamic turn signals, a 12.3-inch Virtual Cockpit gauge cluster, SiriusXM radio, wireless phone charging, and leatherette trim on the center console and armrests. Added safety features include a top-view camera system, front and rear parking assistance, vehicle exit warning, and rear cross-traffic alert.

The flagship Prestige trim additionally adds variable LED headlights with laser high beams, head- and taillight animations, a head-up display, navigation, a 19-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system, and traffic-sign recognition.

2022 Audi A5 Coupe Additional Packages

The base Premium can be upgraded with the $1,800 Convenience Package. It adds features like a driver's memory seat function, SiriusXM, advanced keyless start/stop, and rear cross-traffic alert. That's it for the extras on this derivative.

The mid-range Premium Plus offers a lot more choice and includes the Convenience Package as standard. Here, you can get the Navigation Package for $1,500 or the Black Optic Plus package for $2,000. The latter adds 19-inch wheels with all-season tires, blacked-out exterior trim and badging, and red brake calipers. Another nice option is the S line interior package at $500, adding brushed aluminum inlays, leather/Dinamica upholstery, and stainless steel pedal caps. You can also equip the B&O sound system for $950.

The Prestige offers all these extras besides the audio system upgrade and navigation, which it already has. The top two trims can each be specified with ventilated front seats for $800, although this feature can't be specified if you also want the S line interior package.

๐Ÿš—What 2022 Audi A5 Coupe Model Should I Buy?

With three trim levels to choose from, Audi has made it easy for new buyers to find the sweet spot. Prices range from $44,500 for the base model, which is cheaper than both the BMW 4 Series Coupe and Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe, up to $53,950 for the Prestige. The base model shares its engine and transmission with the rest of the range, which means you get solid performance from the turbocharged 2.0-liter engine. All A5 Coupes come with good tech and safety systems, but if you're after the most safety features, you'd best stick with one of the top two trims, which both have a surround-view camera and adaptive cruise control. The Premium Plus, however, has to be the best deal. For its price, you get notable additions over the base model, such as an Audi virtual cockpit plus a 12.3-inch TFT instrument cluster, rear cross-traffic assist, and vehicle exit warning.

2022 Audi A5 Coupe vs BMW 4 Series Coupe

The 4 Series Coupe is a brilliant-looking thing - if you can stomach the large grille - and is by far the more driver-focused car here. Power comes in the form of a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine that produces 255 hp and 294 lb-ft or a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six kicking out 382 hp and 369 lb-ft. The BMW can be had in RWD guise, which adds significantly to its purist driving appeal. At its best, the 4 Series will achieve 25/34/28 mpg city/highway/combined. On the road, the BMW feels alive and not so biased towards cruising as the Audi. The interior is on par in terms of quality, and the BMW also offers more interior space, especially in the back where the A5 can feel tight. On top of that, the 4 Series Coupe provides more trunk space. Get the BMW if driver enjoyment is high on your list.

2022 Audi A5 Coupe vs Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe

The Mercedes-Benz C-Class is, without a doubt, the better-looking car, and exudes style and grace from every angle. This Benz is also powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, which produces 255 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque. Power is sent to the rear or all four wheels through a nine-speed automatic transmission. Power is plentiful and the C-Class Coupe earns nearly identical gas mileage figures of 24/33/27 mpg city/highway/combined for the RWD model. The C-Class interior is more opulent and features tons of standard features, and manages to beat the Audi on standard driver assistance features. Interior space is good but it also suffers from cramped rear seats. On the road, the Benz is not a sports car but feels as planted and happy to cruise. The Mercedes-Benz is more of a show stopper, which makes it the better coupe.
