2022 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe Review: Electrified Luxury

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe is one of the few Mercs to not have to contend with a direct competitor from archrivals BMW and Audi. The BMW 8 Series Coupe is positioned at a price point closer to the S-Class Coupe, while the Audi A5 Coupe is smaller and more affordable. However, even if these competitors did offer a direct alternative, we think the E-Class Coupe would have a good chance of coming out on top - it's that good. Last year, it received a new inline-six turbocharged engine with EQ Boost, upgraded tech, and new looks. In the best E-Class tradition, the coupe is a beautifully refined cruiser and the ritzy interior is comparable to cars costing a lot more. There are more powerful AMG versions that we review separately, but the more laidback powertrain in the E450 suits the character of this coupe to a tee.

2022 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe Changes: ๐Ÿš™Whatโ€™s the Difference vs the 2021 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe?

After last year's substantial upgrades in terms of powertrain configuration, almost nothing changes for the 2022 model. There are a few more paint options, including Starling Blue Metallic, as well as Manufaktur Moonlight White. Notably, all models also now get Adaptive Highbeam Assist as standard. Last year, this feature was bundled with the Mercedes LED Intelligent Light System in the $900 Exterior Lighting Package. With auto high beams now standard, the intelligent lighting is still available, but as a standalone option. Both models' MSRPs have increased by $1,150.

Pros and Cons

2022 E-Class Luxury Coupe Exterior

Mercedes' latest sedans have become increasingly difficult to distinguish from one another, but the E-Class Coupe's sloping roofline, pillarless side glasshouse, and sleek rear-end give it some distinction. From every angle, it's an undeniably pretty thing. Standard features include a panorama roof to fill the cabin with light along with 18-inch five-spoke alloy wheels. Both the front and rear lights feature LED technology, and the recent changes have been effective in keeping the luxury coupe fresh. Various wheel options of up to 20 inches in size are on offer, as is an AMG Line exterior package and no fewer than 12 exterior paint options.

Engine and Transmission

A 3.0L inline-six twin-scroll turbocharged engine with 48-volt technology and an integrated starter-generator system is used. This system produces an extra 21 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque for greater responsiveness, while also enabling fuel-free coasting. Peak outputs for the powertrain are 362 hp and 369 lb-ft. In AWD guise, the E450 will gracefully launch itself from 0-60 mph in just 4.9 seconds, increasing to 5.2 seconds for the RWD model. Both make use of a nine-speed automatic transmission. As for the top speed, that's electronically limited to 130 mph.

Although the BMW 840i is quicker, the Mercedes E-Class Coupe is no slouch and is a big step up from the next cheapest non-AMG Mercedes coupe, the four-cylinder C300 4Matic. Progress around town is both potent and serene, and for a non-AMG model, it gets up and moves with surprising vigor. It helps that the nine-speeder in this vehicle is a smooth and responsive transmission, and when paired with the refined engine, overtaking is truly effortless. From a powertrain perspective, there's precious little to criticize.

Handling and Driving Impressions

A lowered ride height is intended to give the E-Class Coupe a slightly sportier feel on the road than the sedan. While it achieves this to an extent with precise and well-weighted steering, there's no getting away from the fact that this is a heavy coupe that prefers to go for long, high-speed cruises. With the Dynamic Select controller switched to Comfort mode, the E450 soaks up bumps and surface changes with all the composure you'd expect of a Mercedes-Benz. The optional adaptive air suspension improves the ride quality even further, and it's really only badly scarred surfaces that unsettle the coupe. As a relaxing commuter, the E450 really excels - the refined powertrain and quiet cabin take the stress out of jaunts to the office and back. If you want something a bit sharper, the pricier 8 Series could be a better option or even one of Merc's own AMGs, but the E450 is wonderfully tuned for its intended purpose.

E-Class Coupe Gas Mileage

The E-Class luxury coupe is more efficient than before thanks to the addition of the EQ Boost system last year. For RWD models, the EPA's gas mileage figures work out to 23/31/26 mpg city/highway/combined. The AWD version is only slightly less efficient, returning 23/30/25 mpg. When the 17.4-gallon tank is filled to the brim with premium gasoline, the E450 should be able to travel around 452 miles.

Seating and Interior Space

Climb inside, and you'll find that the four-seater Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe is a model that easily lives up to the brand's high standards. Leather upholstery is standard and the upper dash and door trim are finished in topstitched MB-Tex, a sort of synthetic leather. Of course, those in front are treated to more space and ample leg- and headroom, along with soft power-adjustable seats (with four-way power lumbar support) and memory settings. Merc's positioning of the seat adjusters on the door panels makes a lot of sense since you can actually see which button you're pressing. At the back, things are expectedly tighter, but adults under six-feet tall actually get reasonable legroom. Those over six-feet tall will find their heads making contact with the roof, though. Glitzy ambient lighting, available wood trim, and dual-zone climate control are some of the features that make time spent inside the E450's cabin a pleasant affair.

E-Class Coupe Trunk and Cargo Space

Pop the trunk lid and you will find a cargo area with a volume of exactly 10 cubic feet. The opening itself is quite wide so it's easy to load large suitcases and some smaller carry-ons. However, the trunk itself is quite shallow, so that large suitcase will have to lie flat. A 40/20/40-split-folding design for the rear seats increases versatility because long items like skis can be accommodated while still carrying two rear-seat passengers.

Storage space inside the cabin is reasonable and includes a usefully sized glovebox, a covered center console armrest, four cupholders (two in front and two at the back), and the usual door pockets.

E-Class Coupe Infotainment and Features

Features

The E450 is a well-equipped 2-door luxury coupe, or a brilliantly equipped one if you are willing to splurge on options. As standard, the front seats are heated, power-adjustable (including four-way power lumbar support), and have their own memory settings. The Merc also boasts dual-zone automatic climate control, remote start via a mobile app, power-folding side mirrors, keyless go, hands-free access, and a garage door opener. A long list of safety technologies includes a surround-view camera system, rear cross-traffic alert, blind-spot assist, and Parktronic with parking sensors and automatic parking assistance. To equip the E-Class to near S-Class levels, you can optionally specify goodies like massaging front seats, a heated steering wheel, heated front armrests, and ventilated front seats.

Infotainment

The E-Class Coupe utilizes the brand's latest MBUX infotainment system which is linked to a 12.3-inch central touchscreen and a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster. Touch Control buttons have been added to the steering wheel, but it does take time to get used to them. Alternatively, you can use the touchpad controller or the "Hey, Mercedes" voice activation system - the latter is a bit of a hit or miss affair, but Mercedes isn't the only automaker to be guilty of this. The system is feature-rich, though, including easy connectivity via Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, or USB-C ports. Navigation map updates are included for three years. Both SiriusXM satellite radio and HD Radio can be enjoyed via the 13-speaker Burmester sound system. While wireless device charging is included, you have to cough up more cash for a Wi-Fi hotspot, a head-up display, and augmented reality for navigation.

E-Class Coupe Problems and Reliability

J.D. Power has given the 2022 E-Class range both an overall and a quality and reliability rating of 78 out of 100. There were no fewer than nine recalls issued by the NHTSA for the 2021 model, including a malfunctioning eCall emergency communication system, various problems with the seats, headrests, and seatbelts, loose crash sensors, and blank backup camera displays. One of those recalls, for a malfunctioning seatbelt locking retractor, is also applicable to the 2022 model.

The E-Class Coupe comes with a four-year/50,000-mile limited and drivetrain warranty.

E-Class Coupe Safety

No Mercedes E-Class Coupe safety review has yet been published by the NHTSA, but the closely related E-Class Sedan managed a blemish-free five-star overall crash rating. The 2021 E-Class Sedan returned similarly strong results from the IIHS, including a Top Safety Pick+ award.

To keep all occupants safe, the new E-Class luxury coupe comes with no fewer than seven airbags, including curtain airbags for both rows and a knee airbag for the driver. Rear side airbags are available but will cost an additional $700. Where most vehicles have a basic rearview camera, the E450 enjoys a surround-view camera system. Beyond these items, it also comes with automatic high beams, attention assist, crosswind assist, blind-spot assist, rear cross-traffic alert, parking sensors with automatic parking assistance, and rain-sensing windshield wipers. A dashcam is one of the many optional extras along with adaptive cruise control, evasive steering assist, and much more.

Verdict: ๐ŸIs the 2022 Model Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe a Good Car?

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe is, for lack of a better term, a class act. The improvements that were made last year equate to an even better product that is just as fast and refined but even more efficient thanks to the smooth integration of the 48-volt system. We love how it wafts down the road with confidence; it's not an overtly sporty machine but neither is it trying to be. While we do have some reservations about the infotainment system's controls, we expect that most owners will soon find their own favored way of interacting with MBUX. Yes, rear-seat space and cargo capacity pale alongside the E-Class Sedan, but that car doesn't invite as many admiring glances as this one, and isn't that what a coupe is all about?

๐Ÿš˜What's the Price of the New Mercedes E-Class Luxury Coupe?

In RWD form, the 2022 Mercedes E-Class Coupe carries an MSRP of $66,100. The 4Matic variant goes for a slightly costlier $68,600 in the USA. Both of these prices exclude tax, licensing, registration, and a US destination charge of $1,050. The sky's the limit when it comes to options, though, and the price of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe will climb to over $90,000 including destination with all the boxes ticked. At that price, you may as well get an S-Class. Among other luxurious coupes that are for sale, the BMW 8 Series begins at $85,000 and the much more athletic Jaguar F-Type starts at $69,900 - with a 444-hp V8 engine as standard.

๐Ÿš—What Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe Model Should I Buy?

The E450 and E450 4Matic are identical other than their drivetrains, so the choice will come down to whether you need the security of an AWD system or not. We'd go for the AWD model since it barely takes a knock in terms of efficiency and is faster. Some of the other options we'd add include 19-inch wheels (which require the $2,500 AMG Line package), the Driver Assistance Package with adaptive cruise control and much more ($1,700), and the head-up display which goes for $1,100. Anything more, and the price starts to become overly inflated.

2022 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe vs Audi A5 Coupe

Audi doesn't have a direct rival to the E-Class Coupe but the Audi A5 is another premium and stylish two-door that may tempt some buyers. The base A5 costs $45,600, but prospective E-Class Coupe buyers would probably consider the S5 at $53,900 instead. The latter model can be had in Prestige trim to get somewhat closer to the E450's price. This Audi is quicker thanks to its lighter weight and 349-hp V6, taking 4.4 seconds to reach 60 mph. It comes with a head-up display and a Bang & Olufsen sound system so is well-stocked with desirable features. The base A5 gets a 261-hp turbo-four but isn't actually much slower than the Mercedes. While the Audi is a lovely coupe and offers a comfortable drive, it lacks the grandeur of the E-Class. The Merc simply feels more special to look at and to drive.

2022 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe vs BMW 8 Series Coupe

The 8 Series Coupe is a closer match for the S-Class Coupe, but it actually stacks up well against the E-Class Coupe in terms of size. At a starting price of $85,000 for the base 840i RWD, it's very expensive but does come with heated everything (front seats, armrests, and steering wheel), 16-way power front seats, and a head-up display. The Bimmer's straight-six is legendary and provides even swifter acceleration than in the E-Class while rewarding the keener driver with sharper responses. However, the Mercedes has a much more stylish interior and is less cramped for rear-seat passengers. There's also the feeling that the 8 Series simply comes off as a bigger 4 Series, whereas the E-Class Coupe feels like a mildly shrunken S-Class Coupe. Considering the price difference, the E-Class with a few tasty options seems like the better deal.
