2022 Jaguar F-Type R Coupe Review: Defying The Clock

We live in a world where Honda Civic Type Rs can lap the Suzuka Circuit faster than a Ferrari F50, and Ford Mustang's push out over 700 horsepower from the factory. While this insane power struggle continues, many sports car manufacturers look towards other ways of entertaining, and the Jaguar F-Type R Coupe has found a real sweet niche. It's not as sharp as competitors like the Porsche 911 Carrera and America's sweetheart, the Chevrolet Corvette, but it doesn't have to be. It looks better, and its 567-horsepower supercharged 5.0-liter V8 engine sounds better than most, while a rear-biased AWD system and automatic gearbox help you put the power down and look like a hero on your way to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds. If you look and sound good enough, you've won half the battle. The F-Type R Coupe has some small niggles, such as an unintuitive infotainment system and bad rear visibility, but who really cares when you're blasting down your favorite canyon road? It's been with us for a few years now, but as far as sports cars go, there's an old-school allure to the F-Type that not even time can diminish.

2022 Jaguar F-Type R Coupe Changes: ๐Ÿš™Whatโ€™s the difference vs 2021 F-Type R Coupe?

After a significant refresh in 2021, the 2022 Jaguar F-Type R Coupe doesn't undergo any major changes. The regular F-Type lineup - which we review separately - no longer comes with the turbo-four of supercharged V6.

F-Type R Coupe Exterior

The 2022 Jaguar F-Type R Coupe is one of the most beautiful cars on the road today, and it is one of this car's most significant selling points. It's not the fastest or most affordable in its class, but it turns heads, and that's all that really matters. The 2022 car features LED lighting, quad exhaust exits, a power tailgate, flush exterior door handles, keyless entry, and a set of multi-spoke 20-inch wheels. The overall look is slippery and seductive, just the way a two-door coupe should be. Jaguar offers new buyers the option of adding some extra attitude with a Black Exterior Pack or the Exterior Black Design Pack, which adds numerous gloss black aero bits. A fixed panoramic roof is also offered for $1,200. A fixed panoramic roof is available as a $1,200 option.

The F-Type R is classified as a two-door, two-seater sports car and measures only 176 inches in length. This British sports car's dimensions include a 103.2-inch wheelbase and it stands 51.6 inches tall and 80.4 inches wide when you include the side mirrors. The front track is 62.4 inches, while the rear track measures 63.4 inches. Ground clearance is a scant 3.94 inches, and the curb weight of the Jaguar F-Type R comes in at 3,920 pounds. That's over 600 lbs heavier than the base Porsche 911 Carrera.

Exterior Colors

Such a good-looking car deserves a great paint job, and Jaguar offers the F-Type R with a massive selection of paint colors. The two no-cost options on offer are Fuji White and Caldera Red. Metallic paint options cost $750 and include classics such as British Racing Green, Indus Silver, Santorini Black, and Firenze Red. There are two premium metallic paint options on offer: Carpathian Grey and Silicon Silver. Both retail at $1,550. The SVO Premium palette offers the widest range of colors, and at $4,550, it's one of the most expensive options. This palette includes shades such as Sorrento Yellow, Atacama Orange, Velocity Blue, and Flux Silver. The most costly option would be the Icy White special effect paint job which costs $9,200.

F-Type R Coupe Performance

With a superstar like the Porsche 911 to contend with, the Jaguar F-Type R has to pull out all the stops. Unfortunately, it fails to beat the competition from a numbers perspective. The R is the most potent F-Type available, with 567 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque being sent to all four wheels. This allows the snarling Jaguar F-Type R to complete 0-60 mph in 3.5 seconds, complete the 50-75 mph sprint in 2.3 seconds, and hit a top speed of 186 mph. Those figures seem impressive until you learn that the Porsche 911 Carrera S can match those figures with 100 hp less. Despite this, the Jaguar is still a brutally fast car and feels even faster thanks to that shrieking supercharged V8 engine under the hood. The Jag reminds us that engaging performance isn't only about raw numbers, but also about how the car makes you feel. In that regard, the F-Type R is one of the best.

Engine and Transmission

Jaguar makes some of the best-sounding engines around, and its supercharged V8 delivers a symphony so sweet that you'll quickly forget that the F-Type isn't the fastest car in its class. The 5.0-liter supercharged V8 engine lurking under the hood produces 567 hp and 516 lb-ft, matching the old SVR, and sends its power to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission. The amount of mid-range torque on offer from this powerplant is stunning, and the motor loves to keep going up to its redline. We found that the ZF eight-speed isn't massively quick but suits the nature of this torque-filled V8. The F-Type R Coupe is fine to drive in town, but it truly comes alive when it can stretch its legs on the open road.

Handling and Driving Impressions

The R Coupe is the fastest and most powerful F-Type on offer, so it should come as no surprise that it loves to devour corners at incredible speeds. Last year's car received a few updates to its suspension setup and electronic diff, which made a big difference in the handling balance of this car, and the 2022 F-Type R Coupe feels as tight as ever. With an advanced rear-biased all-wheel-drive system and adaptive dampers guiding you along, it feels planted and grippy even when you're pushing it to its limits (which most will never do). The steering feel isn't that of the original hydraulic setup, but is still impressive for an EPAS setup and is remarkably precise. The F-Type R Coupe loves to hunker down in sweeping bends and rocket out of corners with incredible pace. Switch over to R Dynamic mode, and everything gets even tighter and more responsive. In and around town, however, the suspension can be set to a more comfortable setting, turning this wild jungle cat into a tamer beast. That being said, the ride quality isn't GT-like and there are more comfortable cruisers out there.

F-Type R Coupe Gas Mileage

Gas mileage was never on the priority list for Jaguar engineers when they designed the F-Type R. This AWD V8-powered sports car is all about flash and speed, not metal straws and polar bears. Drive this car like a sensible adult, and the EPA reckons you'll be able to get 16/24/18 mpg on the city/highway/combined cycles. With an 18.5-gallon fuel tank onboard, the F-Type R Coupe should see a maximum range of 333 miles. Our test of the previous year's model showed a fuel consumption figure of 16 mpg with some enthusiastic driving.

F-Type R Coupe Interior

The Jaguar F-Type R delivers a driver-focused interior with all major controls and displays leaning towards the person behind the wheel. This creates the sense that you're behind the wheel of a jet fighter, and we're all for that. This setup will feel perfectly snug for the average adult, but taller - or wider - drivers might struggle to find a comfortable driving position. The interior materials are of high quality, but it doesn't feel quite as premium as Porsche products. Still, we appreciate all the premium leather surfaces and special R Coupe branding. Standard features such as a 12.3-inch driver's display and automatic climate control make this Jaguar a comfortable companion to live with every day, but the overwhelming theme here is sports car.

Seating and Interior Space

As a two-door sports coupe, interior space is limited, but two average-sized adults should have no problem finding a comfy seating position. The sport bucket seats offer great side bolster support and remain comfortable over longer trips. With 42.8 inches of legroom and nearly 37 inches of headroom, taller passengers might feel cramped, but the F-Type R Coupe is perfectly comfortable for short trips. Getting in and out of the F-Type R Coupe can be an issue for taller occupants or those with back or joint problems due to its low ride height. We found that rearward visibility was seriously lacking, and one will have to depend on a rear-facing camera when reversing.

Interior Colors and Materials

Jaguar loves to give its customers a wide range of options for styling the F-Type R Coupe. Just like the vast selection of exterior paint colors, Jaguar offers many interior material colors and finishes. In base form, the F-Type R is fitted with Ebony Windsor leather seats with a matching Ebony interior. These can be upgraded with light Oyster stitching or Flame Red stitching. The Tan Windsor leather, Ebony Windsor leather, and Mars Red Windsor leather options require one to add the $2,550 full extended leather upgrade.

Two-tone options on offer include Ebony and Light Oyster, Ebony and Mars Red, or Ebony and Tan leather seats. The standard Ebony Morzine headliner can be upgraded to a suede cloth headliner for $1,100 (including a $200 charge for the sun visors) or an Ebony leather headliner for $1,500.

There are three trim finishes to choose from: Delta Aluminum, Knurled Aluminum, or Linear Vee Aluminum.

Overall, the cabin is built to a high standard and feels deserving of the Jaguar badge.

F-Type R Coupe Trunk and Cargo Space

You wouldn't expect a two-seater sports coupe to offer much in the way of trunk and cargo space, but the F-Type R Coupe delivers an impressive 14.4 cubic feet of it. Unfortunately, it comes with a catch: the trunk area is long and narrow, which means many bulkier objects won't fit. This space is best suited to a skateboard, snowboard, longboard, or just an actual board, although the cliche two sets of golf clubs will also fit. Inside the cabin, you get a glovebox, a couple of cupholders, a small center console storage area, and two tight door pockets.

F-Type R Coupe Infotainment and Features

Features

With an asking price of over $100k, you'd best believe the Jaguar F-Type R Coupe comes with a decent amount of standard features. The leather-clad interior boasts a single-zone automatic climate control system, performance bucket seats with 12-way power adjustability, metal treadplates with R branding, an R-branded steering wheel, ambient lighting, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. You also get a power tailgate and a power-adjustable steering column with memory. Standard driver assistance systems include lane-keep assist, front and rear parking assist, traffic sign recognition, cruise control, a driver condition monitor, and emergency braking. That's a decent spread of equipment, but we would've liked to have seen a dual-zone climate control system at this price.

Optional extras include blind-spot assistance, a rear traffic monitor, dual-zone climate control, and a heated steering wheel.

Infotainment

The infotainment display is large enough by modern standards at 10 inches, but it's let down by Jaguar's unintuitive Touch Pro system. Responsiveness is quick enough, but one can easily get confused by the menu layout. Modern tech such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included, as is Jaguar's Connected Navigation Pro system, SiriusXM satellite radio, Bluetooth streaming, HD Radio, and a USB socket. The standard 10-speaker Meridian system is more than capable of filling the R Coupe's cabin with your choice of music, but Jaguar offers a premium Meridian 12-speaker system for those who like to rock.

F-Type R Coupe Problems and Reliability

British sports cars don't have an excellent reputation for dependability, but the Jaguar F-Type R is fairly reliable having been on the market for a while now. The 2022 F-Type has only suffered from a single minor recall that affected its seat belt automatic locking retractors. The same problem afflicted 2021 models.

Jaguar will cover the F-Type R Coupe with a five-year/60,000-mile limited warranty. Even more impressively, the Jag comes with a class-leading complimentary maintenance plan that runs for five years or 60,000 miles.

F-Type R Coupe Safety

The NHTSA and IIHS tend to shy away from crashing expensive foreign sports cars, so, unfortunately, there's no official safety review of the 2022 Jaguar F-Type R Coupe, but we wouldn't worry too much. Just make sure the front end is pointing in the right direction.

NHTSA safety ratings are not available at this time.

Key Safety Features

The 2022 Jaguar F-Type R Coupe might not have an official safety rating, but it still has all the safety tech you'd expect to find on a $100k car. Traditional features such as ABS brakes, traction and stability control, and six airbags are standard, as are a rearview camera, LED headlights, and a tire-pressure monitoring system. Driver assistance features such as traffic sign recognition, cruise control, lane keep assist, a driver condition monitor, an adaptive speed limiter, and front and rear parking assist comes standard. Jaguar offers optional extras such as blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.

Verdict: ๐ŸIs the 2022 Jaguar F-Type R Coupe a good car?

It should be noted from the outset that the 2022 Jaguar F-Type R Coupe isn't the sharpest driver's car in its class. If you want something that can set blistering lap times, get a Porsche 911, and if you want something quicker and better balanced, a new Mercedes-AMG GT is on the way soon while the C8 Corvette is a 'budget' sports car that can go toe-to-toe with this big cat. That being said, the F-Type R Coupe is still a massively fast car, and most owners will never come close to pushing it to its limits. It shines on the road, where it's dangerously easy to drive fast thanks to its adaptive suspension setup and AWD drivetrain. The supercharged 5.0L V8 engine sounds like no other V8s around today and is reason enough to buy this British sports car, never mind the drop-dead gorgeous looks. The interior is stylish and comfortable, if a bit cramped, and the infotainment system could do with a bit of work, but these niggles will never be enough to keep us away from this sexy cat that prioritizes the experience over objective brilliance.

๐Ÿš˜What's the Price of the 2022 Jaguar F-Type R Coupe?

You'll pay slightly more than the MSRP of a new Porsche 911 Carrera to get behind the wheel of the F-Type. The price of the 2022 Jaguar F-Type R Coupe starts at $105,300 for this stylish coupe, excluding tax, registration, and a destination fee of $1,150. Fully loaded, the R's asking price will easily sail past $140,000.

2022 Jaguar F-Type R Coupe Models

The F-Type R Coupe is a standalone model and features a 5.0-liter supercharged V8 engine producing 567 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque. Power is sent to all four wheels via an 8-speed automatic transmission. The exterior boasts a set of 20-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, a power tailgate, and a variable sound exhaust system.

The interior comes standard with 12-way power-adjustable leather bucket seats, single-zone automatic climate control, ambient lighting, and a 12.3-inch customizable driver's display. The infotainment system consists of a 10-inch infotainment display with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, SiriusXM satellite radio, and Bluetooth streaming. A 10-speaker sound system is also standard. Driver assistance systems include front and rear parking assist, lane-keep assist, traffic sign recognition, cruise control, a driver condition monitor, and emergency braking.

Additional Packages

The F-Type R Coupe is loaded with standard features. But Jaguar loves to give its customers lots of options, and for 2022, offers a couple of packages that improve the car's overall comfort and safety.

The $1,150 Climate Pack adds a heated windshield, a heated steering wheel, and dual-zone automatic climate control. The Blind Spot Assist Pack is yours for $550 and includes a blind-spot assist system and a rear traffic monitor. The exterior can be styled with the optional Black Design Pack, which adds gloss black and body-colored bits and pieces. It costs $400, but there is a more comprehensive version of the same pack for $2,500.

๐Ÿš—What Jaguar F-Type R Coupe Model Should I Buy?

There's only a single model on offer, so the options list will become your best friend. If we were buying, we'd spec our F-Type R Coupe in British Racing Green with the Exterior Black Design Pack and the optional Style 5061 split-spoke wheels. Inside, we'd stick with the standard black leather upholstery. For added safety, we'd also go for the Blind Spot Assist Pack, which adds blind-spot assistance and a rear traffic monitor. Our build totals $112,350 including the destination charge.

2022 Jaguar F-Type R Coupe vs Jaguar F-Type R Convertible

The coupe body style has always been considered the quintessential sports car shape, and in the case of the R Coupe, it looks absolutely stunning, but what if you're less concerned with body rigidity and performance? You drop the top, of course! The Jaguar F-Type R Convertible offers the same visceral experience as the R Coupe but adds that wind-in-your-hair experience that always helps to add to the drama. Performance is slightly stunted due to the extra weight, but thankfully the 0-60 mph sprint time is unchanged. The trunk size takes a natural hit, but that supercharged V8 engine sounds even better when the roof goes missing. The F-Type R isn't meant to be a razor-sharp track tool, so you might as well drop the roof and have even more fun.

2022 Jaguar F-Type R Coupe vs Porsche 911 Carrera

The Porsche 911 Carrera is one of the most famous names in sports car history, and going up against it in any configuration is always a daunting task for any other sports car brand. The 2022 Porsche 911 Carrera is more capable than ever, and even in base form, its 379-horsepower output affords it massive performance. We think the Carrera S is the perfect balance of performance and price, and with 443 hp and 390 lb-ft on tap, it will scramble to 60 mph in only 3.3 seconds and top out at over 190 mph, provided it's equipped with the PDK dual-clutch automatic and the Sport Chrono Package. The Porsche 911 Carrera is the sharpest driver's car in this class and is also a pleasure to live with on a daily basis. Our only critique is that it's not as exciting to look at and doesn't sound as good as the Jaguar, two elements of critical importance, but it still gets our vote at the end of the day.
