2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe Review: Captain Planet's Mighty Off-Roader

by Aiden Eksteen

The all-new 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe joins the Wrangler 4xe Hybrid as Jeep's second plug-in hybrid SUV - substantiating Jeep's endeavor toward incorporating an eco-friendly, zero-emissions 4xe version of every Jeep SUV into its range by 2025. It shares an electrified powertrain with the Wrangler 4xe Hybrid, too: a 2.0-liter turbo-four engine augmented by two electric motors and a 400-volt battery pack. With 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque at hand, Jeep promises that the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe Plug-In Hybrid is as authoritative as ever but now moves with the conscientiousness to preserve the very environments it's become known for conquering. It offers a 25-mile electric-only range and 56 MPGe gas mileage returns to make it even more attractive and still has a Trailhawk edition to tackle serious off-road adventures. There's a lot to admire from the Grand Cherokee 4xe, except the old familiar complaint that afflicts the regular and older versions: it's expensive. And with rivals such as the Ford Explorer Hybrid and even the Audi Q5 Hybrid coming in at lower prices, you may be wondering if it's all the automaker wants us to believe it's cracked up to be.

2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe Changes: 🚙What’s the difference vs 2021 Grand Cherokee 4xe?

2022 marks the official debut of the Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe: a plug-in hybrid SUV that extends Jeep's eco-friendly vehicle range and the familiar Cherokee line. Jeep presents the Grand Cherokee 4xe in a five-model lineup that, in typical Jeep fashion, includes an off-road purposed Trailhawk edition which is preceded by the entry-spec 4xe within the lineup and followed by the Overland, Summit, and Summit Reserve.

A new Hydro Blue Pearl exterior paint is also available on the top model, as of the second half of 2022.

Pros and Cons

  • Sophisticated yet adventurous design
  • Smooth ride and composed handling
  • Superb, uncompromised off-road potential
  • Opulent and featureful top-spec models
  • Generous advanced driver-assist suite
  • Really expensive compared to alternatives
  • Doesn't offer enough value for the money
  • Not the best if you tow regularly

Verdict: 🏁Is the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe a Good Plug-In Hybrid SUV?

A lot of automakers seem to miss the mark when it comes to keeping their hybrid SUV offerings proficient in terms of performance. The hybrid powertrain we know from the 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe Hybrid disappointed in that application, not offering much advantage with the electric power and managing only a meager 21-mile all-electric range. But reviews of the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe suggest a slight improvement - a 25-mile range and 56 MPGe over the Wrangler 4xe's 49 MPGe. Even without the electric assistance, the Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe's 23-mpg combined outperforms the Wrangler 4xe's 20 mpg.

Compared to the regular Grand Cherokee, the 375-hp 4xe is the most powerful of the lot - including both the V6 and V8. It benefits from instantaneous delivery of its 470 lb-ft of torque and uses an 8-speed automatic transmission and four-wheel-drive system to maintain the capability the nameplate is associated with. Blistering 0-60 mph times aren't crucial for the Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe, but versatility is - and with its 6,000-pound towing capacity, the Grand Cherokee 4xe doesn't quite match up to the hauling capabilities of the gas-only versions. When it comes to facing up against its brand competitors in the USA, the Jeep impresses in all the same ways the more familiar versions have over the years, but now ups the ante with an electric drive range, improved fuel economy, and oodles of power. It's a good SUV all round, just a tad on the expensive side.

🚘What's the Price of the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe?

Getting behind the wheel of the all-new Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe requires paying a price of $55,865, which just affords you the entry-spec model. If you're looking to go off-roading on a regular basis, then the Trailhawk 4xe, priced at $62,485, is your go-to. For a greater selection of creature comforts, there's the Overland 4xe which starts at a price of $65,760. With its significant progression in infotainment and features and an extended driver-assist suite, the Summit 4xe comes in at $69,820. To experience Jeep's new 10.25-inch interactive passenger-side touchscreen, premium 19-speaker McIntosh audio system, and the most luxurious Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe interior with the Palermo seating upholstery, the Summit Reserve 4xe will cost you $74,300. All prices are exclusive tax, registration, and licensing fees and a $1,795 destination charge.
