Latest Hyundai Trademarks Point To Some Strange EV Stuff

Scoop / 3 Comments

What the heck does it all mean?

When an automaker files for a new trademark, we can often predict what that name or patent will be used for. For example For example, Hyundai recently filed to protect the name "Pleos," which could be the name of a new model. We just spotted a recent crop of trademarks from the Hyundai Motor Group, and these ones have us scratching our heads. On May 26, 2022, Hyundai filed applications to protect the names "ETEMPO," "ELEXIO," "EBILITY," and "RADIE" with the EUIPO. Seriously, we are stumped here.

We can likely rule out new models, since Hyundai is now using Ioniq names while Kia uses the EV prefix with a number. They could be trim names, though the Hyundai Ioniq 5 uses the traditional SE, SEL, and Limited badges while the Kia EV6 has less conventional models like Light and Wind, plus the more normal-sounding GT-Line. As for Genesis, perhaps these could be trims levels for the upcoming Electrified G80.

Each patent is filed under "Automobiles; sports cars; vans [vehicles]; trucks; motor buses; electric cars." We'd say the presence of the "E" before every one besides Radie points to some sort of electric vehicles, most likely commercial ones like buses or vans.

It may help to break down each term to determine what it might mean within the context of the Hyundai Motor Group. Tempo relates to the speed of an activity, possibly hinting at specific drive modes. Lexio doesn't appear to be a real word, nor does Radie. Ebility could be a play on the word "ability" but gussied up for marketing purposes.

Our best guess... these names won't see use on any consumer production vehicles. Market materials, an ad campaign, mobility vehicles? Sure, those all sound possible. It's less likely that these are the names of model or trim levels for upcoming EVs like the Hyundai Ioniq 6 or Kia EV9. Genesis is iffy, since the luxury brand has little precedent for naming its electrified model trims, but we'd safely predict these trademarks are for something else.
