Buy Used Subaru Models

Alongside sleek coupes and high-riding SUVs, the Subaru sedan is easily overlooked, which is a pity. While many manufacturers still maintain their sedan lineups, the body style doesn’t get the same kind of focus. Nevertheless, it is still a great entry point into the motoring world, with few vehicles having the same low price as a compact sedan model, unless you count the even rarer hatchback. Though Subaru may not feature on the best sellers list in the USA, it actually has a lineup of impressive sedan models to choose from.

2021 Subaru Sedans

The list of 2021 Subaru sedans comprises three different cars and one performance-focused variant thereof. They are all relatively small, with no executive options, making them ideal for those on a budget.

  • Impreza: The smallest of the Subaru sedan models, the Impreza still looks very similar to its more capable siblings. Powered by a mediocre four-cylinder engine, it comes equipped with AWD from even the base model. However, the standard manual transmission isn’t very refined, so you’ll likely want to upgrade to a higher trim level that gets the CVT. Passenger and cargo space is adequate, though far from class-leading, and fuel economy is subpar.
  • Legacy: The mid-tier Legacy lacks the eye-catching styling of its siblings but it’s actually one of the most competent sedans on the market. Like every other Subaru 4-door sedan, it gets all-wheel-drive as standard along with the fuel-saving CVT. To top it off, it gets a very spacious and comfortable interior, especially at the upper trim levels, but the trunk is still disappointing impractical. It comes well equipped with safety tech, too.
  • WRX: Perhaps the most appealing of the standard Subaru sedans, the WRX is also surprisingly fun to drive. The turbocharged flat-four can be paired with a CVT or a six-speed manual transmission, and AWD is standard. It can sprint from 0-60 mph in just five seconds, which is impressive for a non-performance sedan, and it handles well, too. Unfortunately, this focus on fun comes at the cost of safety and infotainment features.
  • WRX STI: Taking the already highly capable WRX and slapping on a higher-displacement engine, the STI is all about the sport appeal. With access to 310 horsepower and a six-speed manual transmission as standard, it wants to be driven hard with a hands-on approach. It corners like a demon and looks good doing it, with its hard-to-ignore tail wing. This is not a car for the faint of heart, nor the tight of budget.

FAQs

Which Subaru sedan model is the best?

This is a largely subjective question. If you value safety, an easy driving experience, and comfort, the Legacy is definitely the top choice. However, the best all-rounder is the WRX, or the STI if you want even more power and a more enjoyable drive.

Which Subaru engines to avoid?

One of the more common complaints about Subaru cars has been their engines. The EJ25D, EJ251, EJ252, and EJ253 all had their problems. The older Impreza, WRX, and WRX STI models had such problematic engines that owners ended up taking legal action against the automaker. However, newer models have managed to iron out these problems. So, if you’re buying new, you should be fine. However, if you are looking at second-hand models, make sure to check that all recall work has been done, if required.

What is the biggest Subaru sedan?

Of the models available in the USA, the Legacy is the largest Subaru sedan, measuring 10.6 inches long, and standing 59.1 inches high. It has the best overall passenger capacity, too. With over 15 cubic feet of cargo space, the Legacy does fairly well, despite being classified as a midsize sedan.
