The Spyker C8 Laviolette Is One Of The Strangest Supercars Around

Supercars / 8 Comments

This is the second time in two years this car has hit the auction block.

There are plenty of examples of eccentric supercars out there. Pick a Lamborghini. Or a Pagani for that matter. But there was a time when if you wanted something really strange, you went to Spyker. The company's most recent model, the C8 Preliator is a great example. But really, the OG Spykers were the best example. They combined German engineering with a uniquely Dutch flair.

Now, you could own that unique mix of the weird and wonderful. This Spyker C8 Laviolette is up for auction on Bring a Trailer, though we'll warn you now. It won't be cheap. The current bid stands at $222,000 with four days left of bidding.

But with a car this wild, does the money really matter? This is 1 of 25 "Basic Instinct 2" models, and the only one with a Targa roof, which was a $16,000 option at the time. "Targa" might be the wrong word, as there's still some roof left after the panels are gone. T-tops, then. This one is a 2007 model, and all Basic Instinct 2 cars were built to commemorate a film of the same name. It's also the reason for this car's color scheme, which matches the movie car's Jet Black over Lipstick Red interior.

While that film may have been forgotten, the Spyker's aerospace ties haven't been, and it's definitely one of the car's main talking points. Everything on this car seems to allude to planes, from the propeller-like 19-inch wheels to the literal propeller on the front hood, to the engine-turned dash that looks more like an aircraft control panel than a dash. There's also a big red cover that reads "Ignition," arguably the car's best feature.

Well, aside from the Audi-sourced 4.2-liter V8 rated at 400 hp and 354 lb-ft of torque. It should still make that, given it's only got 4,200 miles or so on the odometer. That Audi S4 engine is hooked up to a Getrag six-speed manual, which features an exposed linkage, sort of like Pagani's of the era did. All 400 hp also goes right to the rear wheels.

Let's talk money. It's hard to say what this one will sell for. It being the only Targa Laviolette will probably bolster the price tag, and these are generally not cheap cars. However, this exact car sold for $363,000 in February of 2020. Given the boom in the auto market, as well as the price the car is at now, it's safe to say this auction will exceed that.
