BMW Museum Opens Special Exhibit Celebrating M Cars

Auto Show / 3 Comments

The German brand is making sure we don't forget about the festivities at every chance it gets.

We know, we know. Yet another BMW M celebration of the subdivision's 50th anniversary. In honor of its half-century, BMW M has been churning out epic special editions like the M4 CSL, shameless cash grabs like the Edition Black Vermillion siblings, renewed heritage-inspired color options for its performance cars, and even a novel take on its first-ever motorcycle. But can you blame it? In its time in this world, the BMW M skunkworks division has achieved numerous successes, and it wants to capitalize on them as much as possible. But today's story is a little different. Sure, it requires you to spend some money to experience it, but it's also educational - the BMW Museum has created a new, unique exhibit that opened on 24 May 2022, "marking the very day that BMW Motorsport GmbH was founded on 24 May 1972."

The museum will lay the exhibition out in such a way that it appears as a racetrack circuit. "It is not your usual temporary exhibition," said Helmut Kas, head of BMW Group Classic. "Instead, we are adding special highlights within the museum. For example, the 'Visions' room is actually all about future topics. We have set up a stage for the most successful racing touring car in the early days of BMW Motorsport - the BMW 3.0 CSL - flanked by the BMW 2002 turbo. That is also a symbol: both vehicles are an integral part of the tradition which is shaping our tomorrow."

The exhibition then flows through seven additional rooms highlighting various topics, including the history of racing touring cars, the manufacture of BMW Individual products, the "complete M Story with background information on the distinctive colors," the logo, and the anniversary logo launched in 2022.

The BMW Museum will offer one-hour guided tours too, along with workshops for children in the BMW Junior Museum, aimed at nine- to 14-year-olds. These will be two-and-a-half-hour long workshops that allow youngsters to meet "up-and-coming talents from the BMW Junior Team, experience genuine motorsport passion and team spirit, [and] learn about historic victories and landmark vehicles." The kids will also get to complete small challenges and create their own BMW M designs through airbrushing, which can be either exhibited at the museum or taken home. Best of all, the entire exhibition will be open throughout 2022, so you can plan a Munich holiday for anytime this year. The museum is open from Tuesdays to Sundays from 10 AM to 6 PM.
