• Features: Because most vehicles in this segment are standalone models, most come comprehensively outfitted with creature comforts and conveniences by default. That does, however, also mean that they’re proffered at relatively high MSRPs in comparison to their direct gasoline-powered counterparts. They also usually come with a unique and set selection of exterior colors that highlight their alternative-fuel ethos.

The Chevrolet Hybrid Models

Unfortunately, there is only the one HEV proffered from the manufacturer, which is, however, scheduled to be discontinued in the near future. Here are its specs nevertheless:

• Malibu: Powering the front wheels of Malibu midsize sedan is a 182-hp 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine and three electric motors. Two augment the front axle and a single, smaller unit is dedicated to the rear. A two-speed automatic transmission directs the outputs by default. A single trim was scheduled to progress into 2020 but production was abruptly halted before the start of the year. • Volt: The Volt has been regarded as one of the best hybridized hatchbacks of its time. Its 1.5-liter inline-four unit packs 149 hp and 294 lb-ft and cedes outputs through a CVT to the front wheels. With that setup, this EV presents a class-leading all-electric travel range of 53 miles and returns EPA-derived fuel economy estimates of 43/42/43 mpg cty/hwy/cmd. It’s also known for its surprisingly enjoyable handling dynamics as a PHEV but it is also one of the more expensive options out there.
• Silverado: Under the hood of this class anomaly is a hybridized 6.0-liter V8 coupled to a four-speed automatic transmission and either a rear or all-wheel-drivetrain. The full-size pickup truck was the most fuel-efficient city utility during its time with a figure of 20 mpg. This version of the truck was, however, dispensed with after 2013, so there are only dated or at least well-kept second-hand variants available. With 332 hp and 367 lb-ft at the helm, it could tow up to 6,100 lbs in 2WD mode.
• Tahoe: If it’s people you’d prefer lugging around in a massive electrified vehicle, there’s the Tahoe full-size SUV. It carries the same powertrain as the Silverado and is imbued with about the same in utility. It’s a more proficient off-roader, however, and a far better option for vacationing considering its three rows of seating and all the specifications and conveniences it comes with to keep all passengers happy. It, too, has been discontinued some years back.
