2023 Genesis Electrified G80 First Look Review: New Luxury Era

by Jay Traugott

Genesis made no secret of its intention to enter the battery-electric market and has now made good on its promise. The 2022 Genesis Electrified G80 is, quite simply, an all-electric version of the combustion-engined G80 luxury sedan. That's definitely not a bad thing because the recently redesigned G80 already looks brilliant inside and out. Compared side-by-side, the Electrified G80 and ICE-powered G80 appear to be nearly identical, but there are a few notable differences under the skin.

The most drastic change is, of course, the elimination of the turbo-four and twin-turbo V6 engines. But it's also vital to know Genesis engineers added a number of new features to the electrified version the conventionally-powered G80 lacks. Looking ahead, Genesis claims additional EVs are coming soon but there's already one thing we can confirm: no hybrids or plug-in hybrids. Genesis feels it's a waste of time to invest in those powertrains because BEVs, like the Electrified G80, are the future.

Athletic Elegance Styling Continues

Genesis calls its currently design language "Athletic Elegance," which blends a sporty nature with modern luxury. As we already noted, the Electrified G80 and the standard G80 look almost identical, especially from the outside. Changes include the evolution of the signature Crest Grille. The EV variant features an inverted G-Matrix pattern that's now more aerodynamic.

A charging door has been placed in the grille's upper right corner and appears invisible to the naked eye when it's closed. There's even a chrome design pattern applied to the inside of the door. A solar panel roof not only looks cool but aids in efficiency.

The rest of the exterior is largely the same, though one notable elimination is the rear exhaust system. The split headlight and taillight design remains and there are unique 19-inch wheel designs to help further set it apart. An abundance of chrome trim found on the side glass surrounds, side vents, and the line connecting the front and rear wheels is carried over from the ICE model.

Eco-Friendly Interior

Genesis is joining the pack of premium automakers opting for more eco-friendly interior materials. For example, the battery-powered G80's leather seats, console, and rear seat armrest use natural dyes instead of chemical alternatives. Recycled wood trim and PET fabrics can be found throughout the cabin as well.

The Electrified G80's overall dashboard layout remains the same as that of its gasoline-engined counterpart, with the main exception being the driver's 12.3-inch gauge cluster that now provides relevant charging information. The 14.5-inch infotainment display remains front and center. Active Noise Control system helps to reduce cabin noise in a unique way: it measures and analyzes road noises and quickly responds with its own sound waves in the opposite frequency.

Other features we expect to find are tri-zone automatic climate control and 12-way power-adjustable front seats, though Genesis has yet to confirm either. We expect overall build quality to be exceptional once again.

Power, Batteries, And Drive Layout

The Electrified G80 comes standard with all-wheel drive but this can be altered to rear-wheel-drive thanks to a system capable of connecting or disconnecting the front motor and driveshaft. This means drivers can benefit from both AWD and RWD for varying driving conditions. Genesis claims the system further aids efficiency and reduces unnecessary power usage.

A 310-mile range is the official estimate, but this is according to the Korean EV certification system. Official EPA estimates are not yet available. With 350 kW rapid charging, the battery goes from a 10 percent to an 80 percent charge in just 22 minutes. Genesis claims a 0-60 mph time of 4.9 seconds in sport mode.

Another extremely useful standard feature is the 400/800V multi-rapid charging system that's compatible with different charging infrastructures. An 800V rapid charging system can be used without a converter, for example. Genesis very wisely equipped the sedan with something called V2L, or Vehicle to Load, making it possible to charge electronic devices. Basically, the car can be used as a mobile charger or even a generator.

Pricing And Competition

The Genesis Electrified G80 is expected to go on sale for the 2022 model year with production most likely taking place in South Korea. Pricing details have not been announced, but since Genesis is new to the electrified vehicle market, buyers can expect, at the very least, a $7,500 tax credit, plus additional state by state benefits. For some reference, the regular G80 begins at $47,700 and ranges past the $60k mark.

If Genesis can keep pricing within this range, the Electrified G80 will be a huge bargain compared to its main rivals, such as base versions of the Tesla Model S, Porsche Taycan, and Audi e-tron GT. We're still waiting on Genesis to provide complete packaging details and we'll update this page accordingly once they arrive. What's already very clear is that Genesis is applying its same affordable luxury formula to its first-ever EV.
