Mazda MX-5 Convertible and RF Hardtop Model Specifications

There are two body types of the same nameplate sold in the US, but differences between them are minimal:

• MX-5 Miata: There are three trim variations and one special edition, but all are equipped with a 2.0-liter Skyactiv-G four-cylinder engine that’s dialed to muster 181 horsepower and 151 lb-ft of torque. Outputs are ceded through either a six-speed automatic transmission or through an optional manual gearbox of the same ratio. A sport-performance traditional rear-wheel-drivetrain is standard across the board. A manually-foldable fabric rag-top is the defining feature of this variant.
• MX-5 Miata RF: Considered the grand tourer version, the RF, or Retractable Fastback is a coupe-styled version of the original sportscar. The only elements that differ from the cloth-top are an electronically-adjustable solid roof and Targa-like buttresses that make it around 100 pounds heavier. It can be open or closed within 13 seconds but can only be adjusted at speeds no more than six mph. One benefit is a more refined, quieter cabin when the roof is up. This iteration does cost more, however.

Mazda MX-5 Convertible and RF Hardtop Price Differences

All the below figures are for 2021:

• The base spec of the regular Mazda convertible carries a starting price of around $27k, which increases to about $32k for the fully-outfitted Grand Touring. These figures are with the standard powertrain constituents including the auto transmission.
• A new hardtop Mazda convertible RF is a lot more expensive, coming in at an MSRP of $33k and increasing to approximately $35k for the range-topping Grand Touring.
