Buy Used Mitsubishi Models

The compact crossover segment is hotly contested in the US and the second-most popular of all vehicle types after trucks. Several Mitsubishi SUV models are offered in this market segment. As crossovers increasingly displace sedans on the sales charts, it will become critical for all manufacturers to offer vehicles in this segment, and Mitsubishi offers some great options at reasonable prices.

New Mitsubishi SUVs

In an effort to meet the challenge of formidable competition such as the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V, the long-running Mitsubishi Outlander has finally been replaced with a new model.

This brings the number of Mitsubishi SUVs currently for sale in the USA to four models in three sizes:

  • Mitsubishi Outlander: As a brand-new 2022 model, this 7-seater competes in the most popular compact-crossover segment. The new model features a much-improved interior, responsive handling, occasional 5+2 seating, very good safety, and modern cabin technology. However, downsides include a drivetrain that fails to perform and very restricted 3rd-row space.
  • Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV: Not to be confused with the new 2022 Outlander, this Mitsubishi crossover’s 2020 body is still retained for the 2021 plug-in hybrid model, making it an interim model. As such, boons include third-row seating, AWD, and good standard features, although this cannot make up for the outdated cabin technology and budget interior finish of the older platform.
  • Mitsubishi Outlander Sport: The in-between Outlander Sport occupies a niche between the subcompact and compact crossover. Although old, it has been refreshed recently and still offers good value, an excellent warranty, and a nice list of standard features. Negatives are a weak base engine, a choppy low-speed ride, and an underwhelming interior.
  • Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross: The last compact Mitsubishi crossover model, the Eclipse Cross is a five-seater with sportier styling. Other selling points include its well-laid-out interior, impressive passenger space, value for money, and refinement. However, the performance and fuel economy of the turbocharged engine are not very good, cargo space is lacking, and ride refinement falls short.

FAQs

Is it worth buying the Outlander PHEV?

So long as it still uses the old Outlander platform, no, not unless you can negotiate a very attractive price. It feels old, and is slow and unrefined. A new PHEV based on the 2022 Outlander will hopefully be much better once it comes along.

What is the difference between an Outlander and an Eclipse Cross?

The Outlander is slightly larger and offers a (cramped) third row. The Eclipse Cross is a more compact and sportily styled five-seater with a more modern, smaller-capacity turbocharged engine.

How much will the next Outlander PHEV cost?

It is expected that the next-generation Outlander PHEV should start at between $36k and $37k, only marginally more than the old model.

Which is the best Mitsubishi SUV to buy?

The brand-new 2022 Outlander stands out for being class-competitive and modern. Flip down the tiny third row and you have a big trunk. The Eclipse Cross is smart, but its engine is not as economical as expected and its trunk too small. The new Outlander is the best all-rounder
