2022 Audi S5 Coupe Review: Magical Modesty

by Deiondre van der Merwe

Serving those who don't revel in excess, the Audi S5 Coupe is the middle ground between the sensible Audi A5 and the insanity that is the RS5. The S5 will undoubtedly appeal to those who are happy with just enough performance prowess to make that mountain pass exciting without scaring you to death. Beneath the snout of the S5 lies a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 that sends 349 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque to all four corners, enabling a 4.4-second run from 0-60 mph. Pair impressive power outputs with an immaculate cabin and you have an excellent option within the mid-level performance segment. That being said, the S5 has to contend with the BMW M440i xDrive Coupe and the Mercedes-AMG C 43 Coupe, so it's not an undeniable winner just yet.

2022 Audi S5 Coupe Changes: ๐Ÿš™Whatโ€™s the difference vs the 2021 Audi S5 Coupe?

For the 2022 model year, the bare minimum changes are applied and by far the most noticeable one is the replacement of the old 18-inch alloy wheels with standard 19-inch items. Inside, Carbon Atlas trim inserts replace last year's aluminum inserts. Additionally, Android Auto is now wireless and the options and packages have been consolidated and streamlined.

Pros and Cons

  • Powerful engine
  • Standard quattro AWD system
  • The interior is plush and luxurious
  • Handsome exterior styling
  • Comfortable when necessary
  • Not as exciting to drive as its counterparts
  • Dynamic steering isn't what it should be
  • Passengers in the rear are cramped

S5 Coupe Exterior

The 2-door Audi S5 boasts some pretty understated exterior styling in comparison to the spicier RS5, but it's still an inarguably attractive coupe with more aggressive exterior styling to set it apart from the standard A5. The front end has a set of sharply styled Matrix-design LED headlights to thank for its authoritative appearance along with the large honeycomb grille. At the rear, a set of four exhaust openings, two on either side, hint at its performance focus and the slim LED taillights complement the posterior perfectly. All trim levels sit on a set of 19-inch five-double-arm wheels from this year and come with a panoramic sunroof.

2-door Audi S5 Dimensions

Slightly smaller than its 4-door Audi S5 Sportback sibling, the S5 coupe has a length of 184.9 inches and a wheelbase that comes in at 108.8 inches. As for width, it measures 79.9 inches from side to side with the mirrors included. It stands 54 inches tall from the ground up - it's quite low-slung as a result. As for curb weight, the S5 tips the scales 3,858 pounds, making it lighter than both rivals from BMW and Mercedes.

Exterior Colors

There are a total of nine exterior hues made available by Audi for the S5, three of which are free. If you're going the no-cost route, you get the choice between Ibis White, Quantum Gray, and Turbo Blue. As for the additionally available shades, the rest are all metallic and come at an extra cost of $595. Starting off at the more understated side of the spectrum, Glacier White, Daytona Gray pearl, and Mythos Black are available. For the bold, District Green, Tango Red, and Navarra Blue round off the palette. If you want something more exclusive, you'll need to shell out $3,900 for an Audi exclusive special paint color.

Audi S5 Coupe quattro Performance

We've made mention of the S5's relatively humble approach to life - at least, in comparison to its more assertive RS5 sibling - but don't be fooled. The turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 means business, and this is proven by the Audi S5's 4.4-second run to 60 mph from a standstill. This blistering run means that it's quicker off the line than the Mercedes-AMG C 43 coupe. The S5 is a tenth of a second slower than the BMW M440i xDrive coupe, however. That's a new factor that Audi has to deal with because previously, it was quicker than both of its German counterparts. While the S5 could probably surpass the 155 mph mark, Audi has done America's roads a favor by limiting the top speed.

Engine and Transmission

The 2022 S5 coupe offers a single engine option, which isn't a bad thing when you consider just how good the turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 is. It's coupled with an eight-speed automatic transmission, and there is no manual transmission available. The V6 puts out 349 horsepower and 369 lb-ft and sounds good while doing it. The power that the S5 offers may be ample, but it's almost never unrefined. While this is an enjoyable factor, some will say it lacks some connection with its driver as a result. It's also worth noting that the automatic transmission doesn't deliver snappy changes in manual shift modes compared to rivals. The new BMW M440i surpasses the Audi with power outputs of 382 hp and 369 lb-ft. The AMG C43 is also more powerful than the S5, with its V6 producing 385 horses and 384 lb-ft of torque.

Handling and Driving Impressions

One of the best aspects of the Audi S5 coupe quattro is its cultured attitude. It's never offensive and it just delivers power with exceptional ease. Audi has also managed to strike a good balance between performance focus and comfort with the S5. It never feels crashy, even with the new 19-inch wheels on surfaces that are relatively uneven. This doesn't mean you can take it out on a dirt road and come out unscathed, though. Steering is precise and responsive, which inspires confidence in drivers that don't have much experience, and it improves even further when you switch to a sportier drive mode.

As expected cabin noise is near non-existent and the S5 is at its best when it's cruising down the highway. The thing is, the new M440i xDrive coupe is exciting to drive and offers more thrill from behind the wheel, so those looking for something to get their heart rate up may not be satisfied with the S5. This Audi is for you if you want ample amounts of power but you don't want to sacrifice the comfort and urbane, polished driving experience.

S5 Coupe Gas Mileage

Gone are the days where a performance car would annihilate your fuel budget. The S5 isn't the most frugal in the segment in terms of fuel economy, but it's not the worst performer either. The S5 returns EPA estimates of 21/30/24 mpg, making it lighter on fuel than the Mercedes-AMG C 43 coupe. The best performer in this department is the BMW M440i xDrive with its 48-volt hybrid assist that returns figures of 23/32/26 mpg - and 25/34/28 mpg in rear-wheel-drive format.

When the 15.3-gallon fuel tank is full, the S5 will allow for around 367 miles of mixed driving before a stop at the gas station is necessary.

S5 Coupe Interior

The interior of the S5 has a wonderfully simple design, though it does fall a bit behind in comparison to the RS5's interior, which gets the brilliant Audi virtual cockpit as standard from the base trim. On the S5, you have to opt for the mid-level Premium Plus for this. As expected at this price point, premium materials are used liberally for the cabin, with leather and Carbon Atlas inlays as standard. We love the ergonomic layout that strikes a great balance between elegant and sporty, without coming across as clinical. And, it's not short on standard features, either. Seating is comfortable and space is ample for those up front, with S sport seats that are power-adjustable. The rear seats are understandably a little tight for adults, although it's still manageable.

Seating and Interior Space

Coupes aren't exactly family-friendly cars, but the 2-door Audi S5 coupe does well for its size. Audi claims that four adults can sit in the S5, but some passengers will have to sacrifice on space if the S5 is at full capacity. Still, the front offers more than enough space for six-footers, even if the back is better suited for small children. The M440i offers significantly more legroom in the rear, but not as much headroom. As standard, 12-way power-adjustable front seats with four-way lumbar support are included along with heating, and leather is standard fare from the entry-spec trim. Overall, the space in the S5 is generous, even if it is a task to get into the back.

  • Seating capacity
    4-seater
  • Front Leg Room 41.3 in
  • Front Head Room 37.4 in
  • Rear Leg Room 32.7 in
  • Rear Head Room 36.1 in

Interior Colors and Materials

There are many different interior upholstery and trim options available for the 2022 S5 coupe, though some are only available on certain trims. For the Premium, Black leather upholstery with Rock Gray stitching is standard, but Rotor Gray with Anthracite stitching can be had at no extra cost. The Premium Plus and Prestige are available with the same options as the Premium but get four additional upholstery options to choose from. Upgraded black leather with Rock Gray stitching can be had for $550. Black with Rock Gray quilted stitching costs $1,000 along with Magma Red and Rotor Gray with Anthracite stitching, which also costs $1,000 each. Last year's brushed aluminum interior trim inlays have been replaced with Carbon Atlas inlays.

All other surfaces feature soft-touch materials, while mid-spec trims and up get soft leatherette on the center console and door armrests. There are S line stainless steel door sill inlays as standard to tie the whole package together.

S5 Coupe Trunk and Cargo Space

While the S5 isn't totally impractical, you can't expect to find a utilitarian in the sports coupe segment. The Audi has 10.9 cubic feet in the trunk, which is a little less than what the new BMW M440i offers. Granted, it's not a large difference; the Bavarian brute offers 12 cubes of space. At least the S5 is slightly more practical than the 10.5 cubic feet offered by the Mercedes-AMG C 43. The split-fold configuration of the back seat allows for larger items to fit when need be. The trunk will easily accommodate a set of golf clubs.

In-cabin storage is decent enough, thanks to deep door pockets on the doors and an average-size glovebox. Two cupholders are standard. Storage nets on the back of the front seats and an added net with straps in the trunk are included, too.

S5 Coupe Infotainment and Features

Features

All trims come with a panoramic sunroof, three-zone climate control, and a three-spoke multifunction steering wheel. Heated seats with twelve-way power-adjustability clad in leather and Alcantara are standard across the board. Push-button start and cruise control are also included. Safety features are inclusive of a rearview camera, Audi pre sense city, and Audi pre sense basic as well as emergency braking. The Premium Plus adds keyless entry and wireless charging to the mix along with a heated steering wheel, park assist, a top-view camera, adaptive cruise control with traffic jam assist, active lane assist, and rear cross-traffic alert. A head-up display and traffic sign recognition are reserved for the Prestige trim.

Infotainment

Although the base S5 doesn't have the brilliant virtual cockpit as standard, it does come with relatively decent tech in terms of infotainment. Audi's MMI software is installed to a 10.1-inch touchscreen, is compatible with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and compatible with Bluetooth streaming. A ten-speaker sound system is the standard fare for the first two trims, although the Premium Plus gets Audi's phone box with signal booster and wireless charger extra, and the 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster as part of the Audi virtual cockpit setup. At the top of the range, the Prestige trim gets a brilliant 19-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system and adds navigation to the mix.

S5 Coupe Problems and Reliability

Three recalls have been issued affecting the 2021 models; the first pertains to rear axle lock nuts that may break, the second for missing scuff protection on the rear light wiring harness, and the third for a malfunctioning seat belt retractor. No recalls have been issued for the 2022 model at the time of writing.

Audi makes a four-year or 50,000-mile basic warranty standard for the S5 along with a drivetrain warranty for the same time period and mileage limit. A corrosion warranty is valid for 12 years.

S5 Coupe Safety

The NHTSA hasn't given the 2022 S5 coupe a review in terms of safety, nor has the IIHS. But the IIHS has tested the 2022 A5 on which the S5 is based, awarding it top scores of 'Good' for all five areas evaluated, with Superior ratings given for front crash prevention systems.

US NHTSA Crash Test Result

NHTSA safety ratings are not available at this time.

Key Safety Features

All models in the range come with a six-airbag system that includes driver and front passenger dual-stage airbags. Rear side airbags are optionally available. Traditional features include a rearview camera and ABS. The Premium comes standard with Audi pre sense city and Audi pre sense basic, and the Premium Plus adds Audi pre sense rear and adaptive cruise control with traffic jam assist as well as a top-view camera system, rear cross-traffic assist, vehicle exit assist. Park assist and active lane assist are added to the safety suite in the middle of the range, too. A head-up display and traffic sign recognition are reserved for the top-tier Prestige trim.

Verdict: ๐ŸIs the 2022 Audi S5 Coupe a Good Car?

The Audi S5 coupe is a car that's worth every penny if you're buying it for the right reasons. If you're buying it purely for outright performance, you've got the wrong car. The S5 was built with refinement and sophistication in mind, and while it does offer an ample amount of power, it's not a demon off the line. What it's really good at is offering a decent amount of comfort that you don't often get within this segment and a good amount of standard convenience features. The interior is well-balanced, presenting as luxurious without shouting about money spent. From the mid-range trims, you also get a decent list of features and conveniences - the base model could do with a little more in the safety department. Still, specs are good for the segment, considering the S5 has to strike a balance between the conservative A5 and the much racier RS5, and we think it's done this perfectly.

๐Ÿš˜What's the Price of the 2022 Audi S5 Coupe?

For 2022, the Audi S5 coupe has a starting price of $54,900 which is substantially cheaper than both rivals from BMW and Mercedes. Moving up to the mid-level Premium Plus will bring the MSRP up to $58,500. If you're after ultimate luxury, the Prestige trim goes on sale for a hefty $63,000. All of the S5's prices are exclusive of the $1,045 destination fee.

2022 Audi S5 Coupe Models

The 2022 Audi S5 lineup consists of three trims, namely Premium, Premium Plus, and Prestige. Regardless of trim, all share the same drivetrain - a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 engine producing 349 hp and 369 lb-ft and driving all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The base Premium trim is fitted as standard with 19-inch alloy wheels, a power panoramic sunroof, Matrix-design LED headlights, and S sport suspension. Luxury features include three-zone climate control, 12-way electrically adjustable and heated front seats, leather-and-Alcantara upholstery, cruise control, and push-button start. The driver gets a seven-inch information display and the infotainment system has a 10.1-inch screen and gets wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as Bluetooth streaming and a ten-speaker audio system. Six airbags and Audi pre sense basic and pre sense city form part of the safety spec.

The Premium Plus is the next trim up and adds to these features wireless charging, leatherette-trimmed armrests and center console, and a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster. Infotainment upgrades include SiriusXM and added safety features include a top-view camera, parking sensors all around, adaptive cruise control with traffic-jam assist, rear cross-traffic alert, and active lane-change assist.

The flagship Prestige trim additionally features LED headlights with laser lights and washers and animated head- and taillights. The interior lighting package is upgraded and the infotainment system gains navigation and a 19-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system. Park assist, a head-up display, and traffic-sign recognition are also added.

Additional Packages

Audi provides a host of additional packages for the S5 lineup, but none are allocated to the entry-level trim except for the Convenience Package ($1,800) that bundles a heated steering wheel, advanced keyless entry, a driver's seat memory function, Audi side assist and rear pre sense, auto-dimming exterior mirrors, an alarm system, and SiriusXM. For the Premium Plus and Prestige, you can opt on a $550 Warm Weather package that upgrades the interior to Hoxton leather, and adds ventilation and power lumbar adjustment to the front seats. Available packages include the Black Optic package, which adds 20-inch wheels and black exterior accents for $1,400, while the S Sport package goes for $2,500 and will equip the S5 with red brake calipers, an adaptive damping suspension setup, and a sport rear differential. Dynamic steering can be had for $1,150 but requires you to fit the S Sport Package, too.

If you want to add navigation or the top-spec B&O sound system to the Premium Plus, you'll need to fork out another $950 and $1,500, respectively.

๐Ÿš—What New Audi S5 Coupe Model Should I Buy?

It's often easiest to suggest the mid-level trim when trying to identify the best model in a range, and while the Premium Plus in the new Audi S5 coupe lineup certainly offers a good balance between affordability and luxury, we'd actually rather stretch for the top-end Prestige. With a $62,000 starting price, this model has all the bells and whistles, including a comprehensive safety suite featuring a head-up display and traffic sign recognition, a banging premium sound system, and Audi's virtual cockpit. Add the Warm Weather Package and the Dynamic Steering setup (which requires the addition of the S Sport Package), and you have an incredibly well-rounded coupe for around $66k.

2022 Audi S5 Coupe vs Audi S4 Sedan

The Audi S5 coupe and S4 sedan share plenty of similarities, but in terms of size, the S4 is bigger with a wheelbase that is more than two inches longer. Curb weights are within a few pounds of each other, too. Both cars are available in Premium, Premium Plus, and Prestige trim levels, and feature the same 3.0-liter six-cylinder with 349 hp/369 lb-ft. Performance is identical between the two, with a 4.4-second sprint to 60 mph claimed by the manufacturer for both. So, what's the difference? Not all that much, aside from the slight differences in size, price, and a few tweaks to the spec sheet. The S4 sedan base model costs $3,400 less than the entry-level S5; top-end models really tick the same boxes. Both are brilliant offerings - just check your budget and pick whether you prefer the sedan look or the coupe styling of the S5.

2022 Audi S5 Coupe vs Audi A5 Sportback

With more than $10,000 over and above the base price of an A5 Sportback required to enter the S5 range, the latter should offer up a whole lot more. While there is a 261-hp 2.0-liter four-pot available in the A5 range, the base engine is a humble 201-hp 236-lb-ft four-cylinder. The S5 enlists the help of a 349-hp V6 to get going, which is what allows it to get to 60 mph a full two seconds quicker than the base-engined A5 Sportback. While the base A5 has the same convenience features as standard, including three-zone climate control, heated leather seats up front, the same infotainment setup and safety features, it also has all the benefits of a sedan layout over a coupe. This means there is much more space in the rear seat, and a cavernous 21.8-cubic foot trunk that is much more practical for families. The A5 Sportback is your best bet if you can do without a little more spunk and just want the comforts and luxuries of a beautiful sedan.
