2016 Cadillac SRX Review: The Mini Escalade

In the final year of its production, the Cadillac SRX carries over unchanged. This is not necessarily a bad thing. Though not as blustery as its bigger sibling, the Escalade, the 2016 SRX works well as an urban runabout. The V6 engine pumps out 308 horsepower, ample outputs for getting around, and the interior is only slightly muted than the more premium SUV. With this premium styling and plenty of tech, it carries similar pricing. Medium-sized competitors in the USA include the Lexus RX, Lincoln MKX, and Acura MDX. Each luxury car represents stiff competition, which may explain why the automaker has decided to replace the Cadillac SRX with a new nameplate entirely, rather than try to stop the aging crossover from falling too far behind.

Pros and Cons

  • Plenty of style, both inside and out
  • Competent V6 powertrain
  • Available all-wheel-drive
  • Excellent safety ratings
  • Gets pricey above the base option
  • Not as much tech as updated rivals
  • Poor fuel economy

2016 SRX Exterior

An attractive car, the new SRX boasts sleek lines on a well-proportioned body. The nose is stubbier than you'd expect from the brand, which helps set the crossover apart from its rivals. The v-shaped front grille is framed by a pair of halogen projector headlights, complemented by DRL. The Performance trim gets HID Xenon headlights instead, and a pair of fog lights offer greater visibility. The wheel arches on the house 18-inch alloys, though the uppers specs prefer 20-inchers.

A quick examination of the dimensions reveals a length of 190.3 inches with a 110.5-inch wheelbase. Width measures it at 75.2 inches, while the overall height is 65.7 inches. Nine colors are offered for dressing up the sheet metal, so be sure to peruse some images before making your final decision.

Cadillac SRX Performance

Engine and Transmission

Each of the SRX models is powered by the same V6, displacing 3.6 liters to develop 308 hp and 265 lb-ft. A six-speed automatic gearbox modulates these outputs, directing them to the front axle, or to both if you avail yourself of the AWD option. Though it does not compare with V8 engines, like that under the hood of the Escalade, the motor on the SRX SUV is plenty capable. However, its 0-60 mph time of approximately 7 seconds is average, at best. It is great for running errands around town, though, but it takes a little effort when passing or merging into traffic.

Handling and Driving Impressions

While it does by no means wow the driver, you'll be hard-pressed to find a poor review of the SRX. It is not as fast as some turbocharged contenders, but it is steady and reliable. When you take its weight into consideration, it handles remarkably well. However, calling it athletic would be a grave misrepresentation. Those dealing with poor weather conditions, or who want a little more security, should probably equip the all-wheel drivetrain. It adds a little extra weight, but the added peace of mind is priceless. Ride comfort is quite, despite the relatively large wheels. More impressive, still, is that the 20-inchers do not make it worse, either. But, if you want to maximize comfort, a sport suspension with real-time damping can replace the usual fare when paired with the AWD system on the top trims.

SRX SUV Gas Mileage

Not the most frugal vehicle, the SRX returns 17/24/19 miles per gallon in the city/highway/combined cycles in its default configuration. There is no manual transmission on offer, but swapping out to AWD sees these figures drop a little to 16/23/18 mpg. Outfitted with an enormous 21-gallon tank, the 2016 Cadillac SRX SUV can travel an impressive 400 miles between gas station visits.

Cadillac SRX SUV Interior

Inside, the new 2016 SRX is as stylish as ever. High-quality materials adorn every surface, including the dash, which sports hand-stitched soft-touch coverings. There is plenty of head- and legroom up front, but the coupe-like roof cuts into rear-passenger space, and slightly cramped legroom only compounds this. You may expect this design to hurt cargo capacity, but the 29.8 cubic feet available as standard is more than ample. Fold the second row, and you gain access to a whopping 61.1 cubes. Furthermore, controls throughout the cabin are all nicely situated, with many auxiliary controls at your fingertips on the wheel. Leather upholstery is the only choice, but you are offered four colors. Wood trim runs along the dash in one of two shades, depending on the color scheme.

2016 Cadillac SRX Equipment and Safety

A quick review of the features distracts from any possible shortcomings in the cabin. From the entry point, an eight-way electric driver's, automatic climate control for two zones, cruise control, and push-button start all come factory installed. This is not counting the infotainment, which comprises an eight-inch display with updated CUE software, HD Radio, Bluetooth, a wireless charger, and a Bose sound system consisting of eight speakers. Upper trims add passenger-side electric seating, an extra zone for climate control, built-in navigation, and an extra two speakers.

If you're after a safe SUV, it is a fine choice. It arrives with six airbags as standard, but you can add advanced driver-assist tech like blind-spot alert and forward collision avoidance by opting for the upper spec levels. Each safety review of the Cadillac SRX returns favorable results, with the NHTSA awarding it an overall five-star rating, while the IIHS gives it a top score of Good in each of the four tests conducted.

Cadillac SRX Price and Verdict: 🏁Is the SRX a Good Car?

The US is practically overrun with SUVs, from cost-efficient options all the way through to uber-luxury items that don't always justify their exorbitant prices. With a somewhat middle-ground starting price, the Cadillac SRX has been one of the best choices for quite some time. It presents comparable levels of premium comfort to pricier rivals while still remaining quite practical as a daily family hauler. Nevertheless, it is an aging product that is struggling to stay competitive with all the new releases, so the relatively low $37,500 MSRP of the entry-spec is not the deal it first appears to be. That goes two-fold for the fully decked-out top-spec, which will set you back over $50k. Still, the aging vehicle has held our attention for years, and it could remain popular for a time yet, despite being replaced by the upcoming XT5.
