TEASED: Ferrari's New Hypercar Wants To Conquer Le Mans

Motorsport / 2 Comments

And this time, it doesn't have a Ford GT to worry about.

It may have the most prominent racing heritage of any automotive brand, but Ferrari has not won overall at the 24 Hours of Le Mans since 1965. Of course, we all remember what happened in 1966 when the Ford GT beat Ferrari at its own game and proceeded to win four straight races. Ferrari has consistently competed in the GT Series since then, but has never once attempted to compete in the top class in almost 60 years. That changes in 2023.

Ferrari announced it would return to Le Mans for 2023 in the new Hypercar class. This marks the first time in 50 years that Ferrari will vie for the overall win in the historic race. The Prancing Horse just showed off its first teaser of the car that will compete in the FIA World Endurance Championship. Judging by the lone image, it's going to be pretty.

No other details about the car were shared, but we can speculate based on the Hypercar class regulations. The cars can produce no more than 670 horsepower, must weigh at least 2,270 pounds, and utilize a hybrid system. Ferrari has experience with hybrids, building models like the SF90 Stradale and 296 GTB. Though Ferrari won't have to worry about any competition from Ford, Maranello will be challenged by another Detroit giant, General Motors. Cadillac recently revealed its new Project GTP Hypercar, which packs a 5.5-liter V8 engine.

BMW recently revealed a similar hypercar bound for the American IMSA classes with no confirmation of its Le Mans pursuit, but a number of other brands are all ready to conquer the world's most famous 24-hour race.

While the BMW and Cadillac use V8 motors, French automaker Peugeot will enter with its V6-powered 9X8, a spiritual successor to the 908 that won Le Mans in 2009. Other cars vying for victory include the Acura ARX-06, Scuderia Cameron Glickenhaus SCG 007C, Toyota GR010, and a yet-to-be-revealed car from Porsche. Audi was developing a car alongside the Porsche, but those plans have reportedly been put on hold. Lamborghini, however, will join the action.

2023 is shaping up to be the most exciting year at Le Mans since Ford beat Ferrari.
