Toyota To Showcase GR Power At Goodwood FOS

Goodwood Festival of Speed / Comments

The automaker will show off a Dakar Rally-winning pickup truck and more.

Toyota's bringing the heat to Goodwood this year, with at least five hardcore models from its catalog heading to the event. The automaker said it wants to demonstrate how Gazoo Racing's "multi-championship-winning success in top-level race and rally competition is feeding directly into some of the world's most sought-after sports cars for the road and inspiring fans around the world."

The Toyota GR DKR Hilux T1+ will make an appearance at the Goodwood Festival of Speed next month. In January, the pickup won its first appearance at the Dakar Rally, and Toyota says it's now competing in the FIA World Rally-Raid Championship. It's got a mid-mounted twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 and four-wheel drive.

The Hilux gets 400 horsepower and 442 lb-ft of torque in race setup. It'll be quite the spectacle at Goodwood, as it rides on large wheels and 37-inch tires. For reference, the Hilux is similar to the Tacoma we get in the States.

Last year, Toyota debuted the new GR86 at Goodwood, and the car's appearance this year coincides with its release in the UK. Toyota just released the car, which improves on its predecessor in almost every measurable way. Power is up to 231 ponies for the new model year, and the car offers 184 lb-ft of torque.

Toyota is also hauling out the new Supra with a manual transmission. The car recently gained a manual option after enthusiasts had been howling for the feature since the car debuted in 2020. Toyota notes that the addition of a manual for the Supra makes three GR vehicles with the option.

The GR Yaris and bZ4X round out Toyota's Goodwood roster. The Yaris is a massive success in the UK and Australia, and has sold out, prompting long waiting lists for the chance to buy one. It's a powerful car, with a 257-hp turbo-three and all-wheel drive. The bZ4X is Toyota's first all-new EV, and the automaker says that it's the first of several bZ ("Beyond Zero") vehicles it will release.

To push the vehicles to their limits, Toyota recruited some of its racing drivers to handle the event. Nasser Al-Attiyah and Mathieu Baumel will be on hand after winning Dakar in a Toyota GR vehicle for the second time. Toyota Gazoo Racing Europe Vice Chairman Kazuki Nakajima and GR WEC racer Brendon Hartley will also drive in the event.

The 2022 Goodwood Festival of Speed takes place from 23-26 June 2022.
