Volkswagen Gives Us A Sneak Peek At Its Sexy New EV Sedan

Scoop / 10 Comments

It's currently codenamed the Aero B.

Volkswagen showed off its new ID Life Concept at the IAA Motor Show in Munich, Germany, and our first mission was to find out of this adorable little electric car is slated to come to the United States. The ID Life's sub-$25,000 price point seems like it could go over well in a market brimming with expensive electric vehicles, but the US is a tough place to sell such a small model. During a roundtable discussion with VW executives, we wanted to know if the ID Life is slated to come to America; and if not, what other EVs we might expect from the German automaker?

Speaking about the ID Life, VW of America president CEO Scott Keogh shot down assumptions that the concept was too small for an American audience. "I think the most important thing is price point. That's the message being missed with today's electric cars. A car like the [ID Life] that's got some SUV proportions is something we'd want to have," Keogh explained. "I wouldn't say no. I'd say let's take a look at it."

Later in the discussion, Keogh and other executives made mention of a larger model that would sit above the 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 SUV, approximately Atlas-sized. This model would be different from the ID.6 sold in other markets such as China. It seems like VW is mostly focused on electric crossovers and SUVs to cater towards the US market, but sedans are still a part of the plan moving forward, as we soon learned. To prove it, COO of VW Passenger Cars Ralf Brandstatter gave us some major insight into the company's future product plans.

VW has a sexy sedan on the way, codenamed Aero B. The company has hinted at the Aero B before, but we had a rare opportunity to actually see what VW has in mind. Brandstatter pulled revealed a design sketch on his iPad but we weren't allowed to take any photos or videos. He described the car as a "coupe limousine product that is likely coming to the US."

From our quick glance at the design sketch, we'd describe the Aero B as a cross between an Arteon and the ID. Vizzion Concept. Unfortunately, Brandstatter emphasized that this roundtable was not the global reveal for the Aero B, and gave no timeline on when we would see a near-production concept. If and when it does reach production, the Aero B will receive an ID-branded name, likely ID.7. If you've been waiting for a sexy electric replacement of the now-discontinued Passat, there's now something to get excited about.
