Though both the four-cylinder and V6 are rather lethargic, the 2020 VW SUV can haul up to 2,000 pounds with the former and up to 5,000 lbs with the latter. This makes it the most practical VW SUV in the lineup, too, taking into account its expansive cargo area.
• Atlas Cross Sport: With sportier styling, a lowered roofline, and either a 235-horsepower turbo-four unit or 276-hp turbocharged V6 at the helm, this new VW SUV brings some enjoyable performance to the gamut. It delivers a refined ride quality, too, and its cabin is also commodious and nicely arranged. It is, unfortunately, not as fun-to-drive or capable as its badging and aggressive styling indicate. Both motors are quite thirsty, too. There are, however, eight models to choose from within the lineup, providing variety and a setup catering to just about everyone.
• ID.4: Having debuted for 2021, this ultra-modern cruiser is one of the automaker’s first all-electric vehicles proffered for the US market. With its 201-horsepower electric motor and 82-kWh battery pack, it will reportedly deliver up to 250 miles of driving distance on a single charge. It is as commodious on the inside as the other Volkswagen crossovers and riddled with advanced technologies. The auto company claims it will drive a lot like the acclaimed Golf GTI, be packaged like the Tiguan, and carry the purpose of the iconic Beetle.
• Taos: The newest of the VW crossovers, the Taos comes equipped with a peppy 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder rated at 158 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque. A regular eight-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel-drivetrain or seven-speed dual-clutch and 4Motion all-wheel-drivetrain don’t hint at any real level of exhilarating handling dynamics or prowess, however. Nevertheless, it stands out for its unique combination of reasonably enjoyable characteristics and uncompromised livability.
