2022 BMW X5 Hybrid

After a two-year hiatus, the second-generation BMW X5 hybrid returned last year with enhanced performance, a larger battery, and a host of new standard features. Driven by a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six plug-in hybrid setup, the X5 xDrive45e has combined system outputs of 389 horsepower and 443 lb-ft of torque which allow it to sprint from 0 to 60 mph in a manufacturer-claimed 5.3 seconds. As far as luxury midsize crossover SUVs go, this PHEV can manage an impressive towing capacity of 7,200 lbs. And, with a combined 50 MPGe and 30-mile all-electric range, competitors like the Volvo XC90 Recharge and Lexus RX Hybrid may have the advantage only in terms of a cheaper starting price.

There's no doubt that the renowned German automaker has put a lot into bettering its SUV for the budding hybrid market in America. It's clear that the marque has chosen to put its focus on the sportier side of things, however, rather than the eco-conscious side, which isn't surprising considering the brand's proclivity for outright driving performance. This is made obvious when looking at the figures - the X5 is fast off-the-line and capable of reaching high speeds. It offers great all-electric range in comparison to the competition. As is expected of a BMW sports activity vehicle, the X5 hybrid drives brilliantly, with the added weight of the bigger engine and battery components not detracting from the overall experience. Although it's packed with features, the options list is extensive, albeit pricey. And, while there is no specific safety review for the BMW X5 hybrid, regular models fared well in IIHS evaluations, which should give you peace of mind when driving your family around.

For 2022, BMW presents the X5 Plug-in Hybrid at an MSRP of $63,700 in the USA, which is $1,700 cheaper than last year. This base price is exclusive of any US tax, registration, and licensing fees as well as of BMW's $995 destination and delivery fee. As a standalone offering, the X5 actually comes out as one of the more affordable models in the class, with the base model XC90 Recharge coming in at $63,800.
